This may be a dumb question, but here it is:  In the formula that Hill gives - Six Ways to Turn Desires into Gold:

in the fifth step, what is meant by the phrase "state what you intend to give in return for the money?"  Does he explain that later?  I was never really clear on this part.

I think it is this:

You can have whatever you want, but first you have to know what you are willing to give up in exchange for it.

For example, you want to make 100K a year. Great, but it is not going to just come to you. You need to give up something in exchange. Maybe it is time, sleep, hanging out with friends, TV, etc.

I am not sure he explains it but someone else said there were two steps to riches once.
State your desire
Decide what you will give up to attain that desire.

We have to change something if we are going to change. Doing the same old thing is going to give us the same old life.

Thanks Jay.  I was thinking along those lines, but wasn't really sure.... I figured it had something to do with the "can't get something for nothing" concept.

This does make much sense Jay.  If we are changing, we have to give up something.  What is it that is worth giving up to get what we desire?  Good thing to think about.  And great examples here of what that can be.

And, Jennifer - this isn't a dumb question - see, this makes more sense for me now, too.

Thanks Lance.  Glad I helped you understand it better too.  It's amazing how a dumb question can make us so smart.  Smiley

Hi - I'm just beginning to read this book, started it over the weekend. I for a bit pondered over that question and then came up with my interpretation to this statement. I thought that it was what are you offering for the money. Are you giving a seminar? Or a product? A service? that kinda' thing.

That's my interpretation. I think that I have to go back and re-read that chapter.

Hi Janice!  and welcome!!!

Thanks for your input here.  That was helpful.  I was doing a little research just now on this book and came across a site where this was explained in the same way you are suggesting here.  That seems to make sense and it keeps us focused on the positive action we will take and not on the negative action we might need to do away with.  Maybe we need to be aware of what we need to give up, but we need to be focused on what we will give

As an example, Bruce Lee's definite chief aim is on the wall at Planet Hollywood.  It reads like this:

I, Bruce Lee, will be the highest paid Oriental superstar in the United States. In return I will give the most exciting performances and render the best of quality in the capacity of an actor. Starting 1970 I will achieve world fame and from then onward till the end of 1980 I will have in my possession $10,000,000. I will live the way I please and achieve inner harmony and happiness.

Bruce Lee

Jan. 1969

What you suggested seemed to work for him pretty well.  Wink

Thanks again Janice.

Focusing on what we will give - I LIKE that!  It sets forth how we can evaluate ourselves - are we meeting what we've defined for ourselves.

I realized that after reading the chapter on Autosuggestion (chapter 4) and looking over the formula in that chapter that this formula here in chapter 2 made more sense.  If I understand this correctly I'm supposed to apply the autosuggestion formula to arrive at - get the answers for - this formula on turning desires into riches.  Is that right?  That's what I'm currently doing.

It really does seem like a book that needs to be read all the way through first in order to get the whole concept and then go back and study and start applying each chapter.
