What is in Your Bank Account?

Over two years ago I read this story and it is something that I have remembered to this day. Whether it is true or not, I have no way of knowing, but it certainly could be true. It’s message is extremely powerful so I wanted to share it with you.
Bank Account
A 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud man, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o’clock, with his hair fashionably coiffed and shaved perfectly, even though he is legally blind, moved to a nursing home today. His wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, he smiled sweetly when told his room was ready.
As he maneuvered his walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of his tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on his window.
“I love it,” he stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy.
“Mr. Jones, you haven’t seen the room; just wait.”
“That doesn’t have anything to do with it,” he replied.
“Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged … it’s how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it. It’s a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do.
Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve stored away. Just for this time in my life.
Old age is like a bank account. You withdraw from what you’ve put in.
So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories! Thank you for your part in filling my Memory bank. I am still depositing.”
Remember the five simple rules to be happy:
1. Free your heart from hatred.
2. Free your mind from worries.
3. Live simply.
4. Give more.
5. Expect less.
What are you depositing into your bank account?
How is your mind arranged?
Did you decide ahead of time how your day would go (no matter what happened)? Would your day have gone differently if you had decided to think on the blessings?
Each day is full of blessings from above if we only choose to see them.

I love the story! So, let’s go with it being true! And it’s something I’m in such agreement with. Not that I’ve always been that way…or not even that I’m always that way today. It used to be I’d focus more on the “bad”, or “what’s wrong” in my life. The last few years, I’ve really worked on putting the focus on “what’s right”. And it’s made all the difference. Choice. It’s a choice we all have…how are we going to see our world today? And today, I choose to see the good. There is so much to be thankful for, there is so much good going on. I don’t always make that choice…although I’m so much better than I was in the past.
Today - I’m depositing love, kindness, caring, and compassion into my bank account. And it feels good!
Jennifer, thank YOU for sharing this story - and helping me to be cognizant of what I’m focusing on. Thank you for being “you”… I know your bank account of life is busting at the seams, because you overflow with goodness and light… and it’s like I get to be the recipient of some of that (and that’s pretty awesome!).

Thanks so much for this story. It reminds me of my mom. She is in a nursing home and anytime I visit her I find her helping, encouraging and smiling at others. She is an amazing woman and your blog just put another happy memory in my bank account.

Hi Lance. Yeah, let’s just go with it being true. I remember how you’ve talked about not always being this way. Isn’t your life so much more wonderful now that you implement this! Sure we’re all human and we slip up, but it’s about being on the right track and making that decision to be happy despite… As a good Christian friend says, “I’m not going to let that steal my joy.” It is about choice. Life is always about choice. It’s so sad when people don’t know that. I know you see the good and reflect on your blessings. Thank you for your example. It shines.
