Who Do You Want to Be?

“If you aim at nothing, you’re sure to hit it.” ~ Danny Hall
It has certainly been a while since I have written a post. I’ve been doing a lot of traveling, teaching and writing - just not in the form of blog posts. I’ve even done some speaking - something I thought I would never do - and I enjoyed it! I’ve had some great adventures.
It is always my goal to make people think when I write or teach - to cause people to live more consciously. I’ve been accused of doing just that many times over and I consider it a real compliment each time I hear it. For much of my life I didn’t do a lot of “thinking” and it was very detrimental to me. I’ve learned from personal experience that “thinking” - or living consciously makes me happier and helps me to have more peace so I enjoy sharing this gift with others.
Keeping this in mind,
Do you know who you want to be when you grow up?
We often ask children this question: What do you want to do when you grow up? Usually we get an occupation response like a fireman or doctor or football player.
My question for you goes deeper than an occupation.
Do you know WHO you want to be when you grow up? - Do you know who you want to be today?
Do you know what kind of person you want to be? For what do you want to be known or remembered? What qualities and characteristics do you want others to see in you? What is it that would really bring you satisfaction in your old age? Is it fame and fortune or are other things more important?
My Experience:
A while back when I was studying Think and Grow Rich (It’s a book that I continue to read and learn a lot from at different stages and levels.), I decided to do one of the exercises that Mr. Hill recommended. (I did more than one, but this one has had a huge impact and is what we’re focusing on today.) In the Self-Confidence Formula, Mr. Hill recommends setting aside time daily to think of the person you intend to become and to create in your mind a clear mental picture of that person.
I decided to take some time to write in my journal a clear description of the person I wanted to be and intended to become and to read over it daily. I like to read over it twice daily, but I shoot for at least once a day. Honestly, I can say that I haven’t done it every single day, but at least several times a week. And a word of caution, when I skip several days I slip and become less of this person I want to be. That is a reminder to me to do it more often. Sometimes I will lie down and concentrate on who I want to be for a few minutes.
This simple exercise has made a huge difference in my life. It gives me direction and clarity and much peace as I’m moving in the direction I want to go and not just letting life “happen” to me or pass me by. It changes the thoughts I have and the actions I take, my priorities and the decisions I make. I found the most important thing in my description was to first of all live my life for God and to please Him. I figured out the hard way that simply living for me brought me a lot of emptiness. As I have focused more and more on pleasing God then I gained more and more peace and happiness.
So now the turn is yours:
Would it make a difference in your life if you knew exactly who you wanted to be? Do you think you would have more peace with this knowledge and by actively and consciously working toward it? How specifically would this help you? Would it be worth an hour or so of your time to write out the description and then five to thirty minutes a day to read over it and think about/concentrate on it? Would it help you make better use of your time/your life? Would it help you make better decisions? How would your life change?
The choice is yours…. The life you want is waiting for you.
Things to think about as you write your description:
- Who are you living for? (tip: Living for yourself brings emptiness.)
- Your priorities
- The values and characteristics and qualities that are important to you and that you want to possess.
- What things do you admire in others and why?
- Your natural God-given talents (Ex.- Do you have a gift for encouraging others?)
- How you want your relationships to be
- At your 80th birthday what do you want people to say about you - or as you picture yourself kicked back in your ripe old age feeling satisfied about the life you’ve lived what would give you that sense of satisfaction?
I’m curious…. Have you ever written a description like this before? If so, how did it affect your life?

Jennifer,
Welcome back! Good to hear from you again, and even better to know that life has been going great for you!
This sounds like a great exercise. I’ve done affirmations before and they do work (until I forget to do them!) though this is slightly different, with a focus on the WHO.
Great post!
Daphne @ Joyful Dayss last blog post..Emptiness
Hi Daphne. Thank you. Life has taken some amazingly wonderful turns lately.
It’s funny, I didn’t even think about this being related to affirmations until I read your comment, but yes it is. I think it goes much deeper though. Because it is more long term and focuses more deeply on what’s most important to us and what we want to be remembered for, it pulls on our heart strings. Because of this our emotions are more likely to get involved which is a critical ingredient to affirmations working at all. I too have done affirmations, but this exercise has been far more powerful than any affirmations I have done.
Thank you for your input Daphne. It’s great to see your smiling face again!
Hi Jennifer,
What we focus on - it expands!
I think it’s pretty great, Jennifer, that you’ve had so many wonderful things happening in your life recently. And I do think it’s in direct correlation to what you’ve been focusing on. So, what a true example of just how powerful these moments can be - spent daily thinking/visualizing what you want, deep down.
Have I done this? Well…honestly, no, not to the detail you have. And I’m seeing just how life-affirming this can be, reading here. I have asked myself this question, I have answered it. I have not spent time daily consciously focusing on just that. And I see that I’m missing a crucial step in bringing this full-circle.
Jennifer, thank you for this - once again you’ve got me thinking (and that’s a good thing!).
Lances last blog post..Sunday Thought For The Day
Hi Lance.
Indeed what we focus on does expand!
Yes, I think the turns my life has taken are a direct result of these moments I have been spending. It DOES work. No doubt in my mind.
As you think more about this Lance and consider applying it, I wish for you all that brings you happiness and fulfillment. You are offering so much to the world now. I’m imagining how much more the world will be enhanced if you choose to practice this.
Glad to keep you thinking.
Who I want to be is who I am: A loving, caring kind human being making the world a better place to be. Welcome Back!

Tess, thanks for the welcome back.
Yes, you are exactly all those things! I’m thinking you didn’t get that way by accident. You are truly a beautiful woman who makes the world a better place and it shines forth all the time. Thank you for who you are and what you do.
welcome back. you were missed.
i have not formalized my thoughts as to who i want to be, but i have some ideas….
i want to live my life with grace.
i want to be known for being non-judgemental of others, open and tolerant.
to be a warm and loving person, easy to smile and willing to listen.
i want to do some work longterm to help with animals in need. specifically, and i am sure it is not a surprise, dogs.
this much i know and i can definitely see the benefit in sitting down, thinking the rest through (thanks for the great thinking points) and writing it down.
thanks,
storm

this exercise really resonated with me and stayed in my mind. i did it yesterday. i sat and went through the list of items you presented. it was great. i did review it this morning.
a great effect seems to be clarity in terms of what you should be doing. the exercise seems to be a formalization of personality and character goals….to get to those goals, there are a series of actions that need to occur.
thank you.
it has only been a day and i like the short term impact.

We are our thoughts (or become our thoughts).
Avanis last blog post..Following My Heart
Hi Storm. Please excuse my tardiness in getting back to you as I was on vacation last week.
I’m so glad that you took the time to do this exercise and that you are seeing such great results already. It’s really amazing how it works isn’t it! - and how our lives change when we are clear about who we are and what we want! The “thank you” to me comes in knowing that you did it and are benefiting from it. May you reap many good things from reviewing who you want to be on a regular basis.
BTW- I love the things you listed about who you want to be. I can see those things in you already. I smile thinking about how much more these things will be defined in your life now.
I too have a great love for animals and especially dogs. It seems we have a lot in common.
Hi Avani. Well said. We certainly are a result of our thoughts.
I haven’t done this to the extent that you suggest, and I’m pleased to hear how well you’re doing! Time to give it a decent shot….
There is definitely merit in knowing who we want to be and focusing on becoming that person…
All the best

Rosss last blog post..Does integrity count for anything?
Hi Ross. I know you won’t be disappointed as you give this a shot. So life changing. I can tell a huge difference on the days I don’t do this verses the days I do. That’s motivation enough for me to do it. I’d love to hear how this goes for you. All the best to you!
Great things to do Jennifer. I haven’t done this before. It sounds like a great thing to implement. I will have to give it a whirl! I have been working on living more fully and authentically. I’m making progress but not where I want to be. I do find the closer I get the more joy I feel.
Opps, wrong email! LOL!
Laurie, I can tell you are working toward who you want to be. I see much beauty in your authentic you. It shines forth. I think we can all make improvements. I’d love to hear how this impacts your life and how you experience even more joy because of it. (I’ve entered the wrong email address before too.
