Lessons from Peace Pilgrim
Peace, inner peace February 18th, 2009
Peace Pilgrim…..Have you heard of her? She spent her life sharing peace with others. She walked over 25,000 miles all over the U.S. and into Canada and Mexico on a personal pilgrimage to share peace with others. Peace Pilgrim truly understood what peace is.
I would like to thank my friend, Stephen Hopson, for pointing me in the way of Peace Pilgrim. I was not aware of her life or what she stood for until Stephen brought her to my attention. Apparently, he noticed some kind of correlation between us.
Peace Pilgrim taught several steps to inner peace. Today, I would like to share with you her message and four preparations of inner peace.
Peace Pilgrim’s Message
MY MESSAGE: My friends, the world situation is grave. Humanity with fearful faltering steps, walks a knife-edge between complete chaos and a golden age, while strong forces push toward chaos. Unless we, the people of the world, awake form our lethargy and push firmly and quickly away from chaos, all that we cherish will be destroyed in the holocaust which will descend.
This is the way of peace: Overcome evil with good, falsehood with truth, and hatred with love.
The Golden Rule would do as well. Please don’t say lightly that these are just religious concepts and not practical. These are laws governing human conduct, which apply as rigidly as the law of gravity. When we disregard these laws in any walk of life, chaos results. Through obedience to these laws this frightened, war-weary world of ours could enter into a period of peace and richness beyond our fondest dreams.
Four Preparations
1. Assume right attitude toward life
Stop being an escapist or a surface-liver as these attitudes can only cause inharmony in your life. Face life squarely and get down below the froth on its surface to discover its verities and realities. Solve the problems that life sets before you, and you will find that solving them contributes to your inner growth. Helping to solve collective problems contributes also to your growth, and these problems should never be avoided.
2. Live good beliefs.
The laws governing human conduct apply as rigidly as the law of gravity. Obedience to these laws pushes us toward harmony; disobedience pushes us toward inharmony. Since many of these laws are already common belief, you can begin by putting into practice all the good things you believe. No life can be in harmony unless belief and practice are in harmony.
3. Find your place in the Life Pattern.
You have a part in the scheme of things. What that part is you can know only from within yourself. You can seek it in receptive silence. You can begin to live in accordance with it by doing all the good things you are motivated toward and giving these things priority in your life over all the superficial things that customarily occupy human lives.
4. Simplify life to bring inner and outer well-being into harmony.
Unnecessary possessions are unnecessary burdens. Many lives are cluttered not only with unnecessary possessions but also with meaningless activities. Cluttered lives are out-of-harmony lives and require simplification. Wants and needs can become the same in a human life and, when this is accomplished, there will be a sense of harmony between inner and outer well-being. Such harmony is needful not only in the individual life but in the collective life too.
Your turn: Have you learned anything that you can apply to your life from these words of wisdom by Peace Pilgrim?
~ I would like to thank the Peace Pilgrim website for providing this information. The site is full of all kinds of information about her and her life. A free book is even available by clicking here. (I just ordered one myself and am looking forward to it’s arrival. (Thanks Bruce! and thanks for a great conversation.) )

Hi Jennifer,
I have not heard of her - thank you for the introduction.
I’m drawn to the first of the four preparations. I spent part of this past weekend dealing with a problem - and I came out of the weekend feeling a sense of negativity in my thoughts. The problem I was dealing with - I think that turned out okay. It was a situation in which I was called to diffuse the whole problem - and not one in which I was directly involved. The problem I’ve been having this week - is in how I’ve internalized the whole thing. How I’ve focused on what I “think” is right. When the truth is - how can I say what is right, when I have not walked in the shoes of everyone involved. So, what kind of attitude am I projecting? That’s my take away here. And I’m feeling it shifting. Away from blaming one side - to one of sadness that this situation developed. Am I in a better place? I don’t know. I do know that these words of peace help. As I move on, I take comfort in them, and in the idea of “overcoming evil with good, falsehood with truth, and hatred with love”.

Jennifer,
I’d never heard of the Peace Pilgrim until now, so thanks for introducing her here. I was blown away by the second and third preparations: live good beliefs, and find your place in the life pattern. Advice that is beautiful and wise.
Daphnes last blog post..The WriteShots and The Quote Effect
I don’t have as much problem with unnecessary possessions, but I certainly have with clutter. Why would I have clutter if I don’t have many unnecessary possessions? Because I haven’t learned the habit of investing in the right tools to organize myself and remove clutter.
I would say most everything I own is stuff I need — there are just a few boxes of personal treasures that I keep simply because of sentimental values. Otherwise, I’m not bad at getting rid of stuff I don’t need. But I am learning the lesson of investing in organizational tools. Slowly and painfully.

The four preparations are beautiful.
I really like the “find your place in the life pattern” point.
I think a lot of happiness and feeling good comes from living your values and living from the inside out … the old “be true to you” message.
J.D. Meiers last blog post..Test Your Decisions Against Reality
Lance, I see that this situation is a huge struggle for you. And from reading your blog post, indeed it’s one that most anyone would struggle with. You’re getting there Lance… seeing the importance of listening to everyone and putting yourself in their shoes. Sometimes it just takes a while for things to calm down in our minds and then we can take a step back and see things from a different perspective. You will Lance. I know you will. You already are. I see much growth coming your way resulting from this. Just think about the good lessons you will learn from this and all the goodness that will arise in your from this! I’m glad that these words of peace are helping you to sort it out.
Daphne, it was my honor to introduce Peace Pilgrim here. Indeed the second and third preparations are something to live by. They will bring us peace in our lives. She was very wise!
Ari, I have a confession to make. I laughed when I read your first sentence. I thought you were being sarcastic. It sounded like something I would have said in sarcasm…. And I know that I have clutter that needs to go that I’m holding onto. It doesn’t need to be organized. It needs to be thrown away. However, I do have some clutter that needs to be organized. And thankfully my husband is building some bookshelves now and we recently purchased a filing cabinet - finally! Anyway, I do understand your point, and now I’m just laughing at me.
I too have those sentimental boxes. They’re just so special to me.
And I too understand about investing in organizational tools. Now, I just need to throw away as much as I am organizing.
Hi J.D. They are beautiful, aren’t they! The one about finding your place in the life pattern is a good one. I think it’s the one that strikes me the most.
Happiness always results when we actually live our values and the things that we say are most important to us. “Be true to yourself”…. what a great way to sum it up.
Funny- I never heard of her either. By the sounds of it, my life was not richer for it either. She sounds like she was an incredible person- in fact she must be because she inspired you to write about her life messages, and in turn inspired me to read them, conteplate them, and respond. Thank you for sharing such wisdom today Jennifer!
Jays last blog post..It is all in my Nature
Hi Jennifer,
I have not heard of her but I can relate to number 3 and 4.
I now know that I have a purpose for being here on this planet but I didn’t feel like that for a long time.
We are all here for a reason beyond owning ‘things’, superficial materialistic things. I believe we all have a path to follow and we just have to figure out what it is.
I was guilty of hoarding things but now my house and life are uncluttered, anything I do not use goes to the charity shop so someone else can make use of it. I sell some of my countless books and CD’S at my local car boot sale.
Thanks

Hi Jennifer - I remember reading about the this remarkable woman before and was touched by her mission. She’s one of those people we would (probably) all love to emulate.
I love what she says about living simply. That’s something I’m working on - decluttering and feeling such freedom when I do.

My best friend and I went on a journey to walk across the U.S.A. touching every state, to build money for a list charities. We didn’t get very far though because our sponsor made a bad business decision and could no longer sponsor us.
I am overjoyed to read this post. Thank you

Hi Jay. I’m glad that you gained so much inspiration from this message from Peace Pilgrim. I think all of our lives would have been richer up to this point if we would have known her - or at least about her. I’m trying to figure out how she was on this pilgrim for 30 years and made such a difference in the lives of people in her time and we haven’t heard of her…. Anyway, enjoy contemplating and growing.
Hi Michelle.
I’m there with you. It does bring so much peace to my life knowing my purpose. While it’s still evolving to some degree, the more it does, the more peace I have. Really though, a lot of the peace just comes knowing that I am on the right journey.
It definitely goes WAY beyond the material. I really don’t think the material has anything to do with it.
While I have gotten rid of some junk, my mind has been working on getting rid of a lot more of it. I really do want to simplify more and more. The less clutter there is around me, the less my mind is cluttered. I have a big collection to give away as well. The collection is just going to grow.
Hi Barbara. Finally someone here has heard about Peace Pilgrim. You receive the award!
I would say that most would love to emulate her. She was actually in so many ways like my friend Ron that this site is dedicated to. They both had the same kind of peace and wisdom and similar missions. They could both turn any sticky situation into a pleasant one.
I’m sure your decluttering is bringing much relief and freedom. It has a way of doing that.
Hi Nicholas. Wow, that’s a neat story. So you actually started to walk to all 50 states?! I applaud you for making the commitment to begin and to go as far as it allowed. Too bad the support was taken away and you had to stop. I would love to hear of your experiences on the part you did go on.
I’m glad this post brought you so much joy. Have a great day!
Hi Jennifer…
How nice to be refreshed about Peace Pilgrim and her mission. I was introduced to her life’s work many years ago. Amazing that no one really knows her by her real name but remembers her incredible journeys for the purpose of spreading peace. Ironically she was accidentally killed by a vehicle while walking.
I most relate to living an uncluttered life where minimalism works best for me especially in my home.:)
Thank you for an inspiring post and nice to meet you!
Best Always,
Henie

Hi Henie. Welcome to Principles for Peace.
It was my pleasure to give you this refresher course on Peace Pilgrim. It is interesting that no one really knew her by her real name, but really I think she preferred it that way. I think she wanted her identity to get lost and peace to be known. I think she succeeded at that.
That was tragic that she got killed by a car. It’s interesting.. I heard she got killed while riding in a car. Maybe you know the real story. Wonder where it happened?
An uncluttered life sure makes things better, doesn’t it!
The honor is all mine. It is truly great to meet you Henie. BTW- I love your blog!
Hi Jennifer…
Peace Pilgrim’s name was Mildred Norman and you are correct that she died instantly in a car collision! An amazing life’s work…she walked 25,000 miles across America…stopping to eat only when food was offered; resting only when shelter was offered.
I am so happy to have made this connection with you!:~)
Take care!
Henies last blog post..Sempiternal Glow
Hi again Henie. Mildred Norman… I think I heard that. How sad that she died in a car crash. There’s probably no place that she would have rather died than on a road though.
That’s a lot of miles!!! and she made such an impact!
I am happy of the new connection as well! There are so many great people in the blogosphere. I am glad to have met another one.
Have a great week!
Hi Jennifer, I like the four points you described above, especially on the fourth point.
I never heard Peace Pilgrim before, however I love her story and message. It was truly inspiring. The world needs more Peace Pilgrim.
Thanks for sharing, Jennifer.
Arswinos last blog post..I Want To Be Extraordinary !!
Hi Arswino. I totally agree that the world needs more Peace Pilgrims. I’m on a mission to be one myself. I don’t plan on walking the world per say, but I hope to bring peace to a lot of people in my own way. She truly is an inspiration to me in many ways.
That fourth point seems to resonate with a lot of people. It does with me too.
Have a great day Arswino! Thanks for your comment. A big
