What Reality Have You Created?
inner peace, positive thinking October 9th, 2008We find what we’re focused on.
“The more you believe in something, the more you will experience it. For instance, if you think people are generally evil and the kind who will take advantage of you, well, then you will experience that! If you believe the world is mostly made up of good, honorable people, then that’s what you’ll have in your life. It’s an energy thing - like attracts like.” - Stephen Hopson
I began writing a post yesterday (actually now, it was day before yesterday), but my thoughts and experiences led me to write this one instead. I was already in the process of writing about this when I came across Stephen Hopson’s comment (above) on my interview at his blog. Was that coincidence??? It just fit so well with the whole point of this post.
Things are exactly/precisely the way we perceive them to be - the way we have created in our minds that they will be - the way we have told ourselves they are or would be. We naturally or automatically look for/see and listen for/hear things that confirm our thoughts and intentions. “That’s it!” (usually when we’re focused on the positive) or “Aha, just as I thought!” (usually when we’re focused on the negative) (I wrote this paragraph before reading Stephen’s comment above!)
It works both ways exactly the same. If we tell ourselves negative things we believe that and find things to prove or validate that. If we tell ourselves positive things we believe that and find things to prove that.

In regard to others:
Example: I saw a perfect example of this over the weekend. Someone was convinced that I was always doing something for a certain reason (Only sometimes do I do this bad habit - yes, I admit that maybe sometimes I do, although not intentionally - something else for me to work on
). They heard me say something and got upset with me because they interpreted it as a confirmation of my bad intentions (which did not even exist.)
In regard to ourselves:
How it works:
* If we convince ourselves that we are “good for nothing” then we communicate that message (usually subconsciously) to others. They typically react accordingly since that is the message we give them. Then that confirms our thoughts. We conclude, “Well, I was right. They think I’m a nobody too.”
However, often times, the person is not even reacting to us. In reality, they are simply saying something or doing something and we perceive in a distorted way.
* The opposite is true as well. If we believe that we are a beautiful person on the inside we communicate that to others. They react accordingly since that is the message we give them. Then that confirms our thoughts. We conclude, “Well, I was right. I am beautiful, aren’t I?”
But hey, so what if the person is not actually reacting to our positive vibes? If we perceive it in a good way, is that harmful? It’s certainly better to perceive good than bad.
Example: Just yesterday I was reminded of someone that I know very well. She has convinced herself that people are evil with evil intentions and that everyone is against her and out to get her and cause her harm. She is also convinced that people don’t want to be around her. Almost very literally, everything is a confirmation of these thoughts and beliefs that she has. Subconsciously she even pushes people away and then her thoughts are confirmed…. “Just as I thought. No one wants to be around me.”
Principle: A person sees exactly what they tell themselves is real. A person creates their own confirmations based upon what they have already told themselves is true.
* Note: I am not saying that there is no reality. Only that we often create our own reality based on our perceptions of the world (or should I say preconceptions?). The negative realities we create have as their foundation thinking errors, which we have at least partially discussed.
How to apply this principle:
We are in control of exactly what we find and how we perceive things. We find exactly what we tell ourselves we will find. If we are open to and believe there is good in everything then we find good. If we are open to and believe there are answers we find answers. If we are open to and believe there are solutions to problems, we find solutions. If we are open to and believe our dreams will come true, we look for and find ways to make our dreams come true. If we tell ourselves it’s possible then our minds will find a way. This was a profound truth I took away from one of my favorite books, The Magic of Thinking Big, by Dr. Paul J. Schwartz. (This was the first personal growth book I ever read many years ago. I couldn’t recommend it enough!)
Food for thought and discussion:
What reality have you created?
Are you in control of your thoughts and what you are focused on or are your thoughts and focus in control of you?
Are you looking for confirmation for negative thoughts or positive ones?
What examples of this have you witnessed either in yourself or others?

Hi Jennifer. What reality have I created? You know, I think I’ve just stopped and allowed reality to flow through. I’ve surrendered in some way. It’s hard to describe as this experience has been unfolding over the last couple of days.
“If we convince ourselves that we are “good for nothing” then we communicate that message (usually subconsciously) to others.” I really understand that comment. I have seen it play over and over in my past.
This post purely reflects the title of your blog.

I’m with Davina. I’ve tending to let things flow, giving up control more or less. Less besieged by worry, I am choosing to focus more on the positive side of things.

Davina and Evelyn, I wasn’t sure what you were saying at first, but then I “got it.” It’s only when we surrender our negative thoughts and stop trying to hold on to things and instead focus on the positive that reality will actually flow and reveal itself. It sure feels better to focus on the positive doesn’t it! Focusing on the negative enslaves us to negativity.
Maybe a good question to ask would be “What good can come from this if I hold onto it or think negative about it?” or “Is this really the truth?”
Davina, I too have seen that play out in my past.
I think you are right about this post reflecting the title of the blog.
Preconceptions… nice one
If you’ve read my last blog post my reality must be one of awesomeness.
I’m looking for confirmation of what exists when I have no thoughts. The preconception of no conception… I don’t know how that works.
I definitely note that the reality I perceive changes when I throw out a thought I find in my head. Recently I noticed fear on public transport. I threw it out and now public transport is much more friendly

Reality? What is it for each of us? It is what we perceive, yes! Preconceive - that’s a great way to look at it - basing our conceptions on what we think or expect - not on true reality.
I had a period in my life a few years ago, where I really had slid into negative thinking. And, guess what. Reality went along with it. Not much “good” was coming my way (surprise, surprise). Once I turned this around - my life really turned for the better too. Now, I really work to focus on the positive. To see the good in all (usually, there are still days…). And, I am in such a better place in my life. It’s great to be alive! Life is wonderful Jennifer! My reality is now based on the positive, the good. And that’s what I’m drawn to now (and why I’m here often…).

Thanks Jennifer for mentioning my quote on the subject of how we create our own reality based on our thoughts and perceptions.
I thought you did a fabulous job putting it together when you said that we are always trying to find a way to confirm “our reality” with the examples you gave. Giving examples are a great way to demonstrate what you’re trying to say. Excellent!
Thanks for being a part of my journey. It’s been amazing!

Jarrod, It’s good to see you around again. I can sure buy into awesomeness as a great reality. I’ll go check out your post.
We must me on the same wave length today because I was just toying with the idea of seeing things as neutral with no preconceptions at all so that I could then learn to attach a positive meaning to everything. I see a blog post in the making…. Thanks for the great example of public transport.
Lance, yes, reality is about our perceptions as you noted.
I too was at that place in my life for a long time - all the negativity. Yes, nothing good was going on. Could you believe it? I can definitely tell that you are in a positive reality now. It shines forth! I’m so glad our positive realities have crossed paths! Life is wonderful, isn’t it!
Stephen, your welcome for using your quote. I couldn’t help but use that quote. It was just so perfect.
Glad you liked the examples. Examples really do make things clear don’t they. I’m sure you use a lot in your speaking.
Your welcome for being a part of my journey, but the thanks goes to you for being a part of mine!
your post is very relevant to me. i had seen this concept in action recently.
i had been reviewing a number of posts on some message boards and noticed a difference in attitude. negative thinking really does beget negative experiences and positive thinking likewise.
thanks for the reinforcement

Storm, glad you found this helpful and relevant.
Thank you for the example that you gave. That was a good one. Yes, both positive and negative are very powerful forces in opposite ways. From experiencing both, I know which side I want to be on! We’ll stay on the positive side here. From the title of your last post, it looks like you’re on the right path as well.

I’m with positive. What I’d do is to keep my spirits up even when I’m at my most drained out time of the day.
@Jennifer: The interesting thing I have noted with living life while doing my best to not apply filters is that when I am most free of pre-conceptions life naturally becomes awesome.
I don’t have to watch people making a pancakes and think making pancakes is awesome, I just automatically gain this sense of awesomeness and everything is wonderful.
So adding a positive view to things is unnecessary in my experience.
Jarrod - Warrior Developments last blog post..Awesomeness has No Cost
Daniel, positive is the way to go all the time. Although it is much more difficult when a person is tired. Rest is important to keep us positive.
Jarrod, I experienced that same thing yesterday about many things automatically becoming awesome when I took away the filters. Not everything, but many. Pretty neat, huh! It’s really neat to see things as they are, with no filters at all.
Thank you for the reminder. I was taught this about 2 years ago by watching the DVD called “The Secret” and while I found it bogus for what I was doing at the time, the message did hit home with me, it made perfect sense but as the months have gone by I have lost what I learned somewhere. I need to remember what I learned and apply it to my life now!
Jennys last blog post..Moments
Hi Jennifer - The quote you started this post off with is very powerful. We do attract “like” to us. It’s no wonder we often see like minded people working together for a good cause, or like minded (negative) people joining together and creating problems for others.
Personally, I’ll take the kindhearted people. That’s what I choose to have in my life. They make life so much sweeter.
Barbara Swaffords last blog post..A.S.K. Darren Rowse of Proglogger - How Do We Increase Our Readership
Being aware of this principle for years I generally do pretty well with it. However, sometimes we can create too much of a good thing. For example, as a coach, I love opportunities, for new business projects, fresh learning approaches and life processes especially. Yet lately I have been overly blessed by my expansive attitude and I recently realized that I was approaching overwhelm and thinking about not having enough time or never being able to get caught up.
Well, as you so wisely have pointed out here. I’ve created this mess even more so by labeling it as so.
So now I’m just kicking back and deciding to do what I can with what I have and allow the rest to be. My new mantra is - everything comes at the perfect time in the perfect way and I have all the time I need to enjoy whatever I choose.

Jenny, I’m glad you found this a helpful reminder. The Secret as bogus, huh? I’m not a proponent of “The Secret,” although I can see how this may sound like it somewhat. I do think the secret has some basis for truth, but, the truth is I can’t imagine or believe something is going to happen and then sit back and wait for it to happen (unless I believe in laziness). That’s not what I was trying to communicate here. Sorry if I did. If I truly believe something will happen then yes I will give off that energy, but most importantly I will do the work to make it happen. Hope that makes sense. Maybe I went into something here with this comment that wasn’t even really related to your comment or this post, but oh well….
Barbara, yes birds of a feather do flock together. Positive attracts positive and negative attracts negative. With this in mind, I can see how you would attract kindhearted people into your life. That description fits you well!
Tom, I can totally identify with your ideas for new business projects and being overwhelmed and all the self talk about time, etc. You are so right that just by telling ourselves that we don’t have enough time and that we will never get caught up that we will create that exact thing for ourselves. So true. So true.
I love your mantra! Gonna have to remember that for sure as I am in the very process of working to create balance in my life. This will be very helpful indeed. Thank you. Thank you again!

Wonderfully said, Jennifer. The hardest thing to do for most is to let go of the judgements of ourselves which then also leads to that of others (to and fro) which then limits our experience by putting us a steel box that separates us from the potential a living a truly beautiful, fun and blessed life. The Universe ALWAYS says YES to whatever ever it is you are thinking/feeling/vibrating out into the world. Realize that truth and shift reality into one filled with evidence of fear and negativity to the one of endless learning, acceptance and pure possibilty!

Roldan, I think you are exactly right about how letting go of the judgments of ourselves is the most difficult thing. Of course it affects how we see others and it limits everything we do, doesn’t it! Changing our mindset from fear, etc., to greatness only makes sense. Thank you for your thoughts.
